Heavy Water Board (HWB), a component unit of the Atomic Energy Department’s Industries and Minerals Division, is primarily responsible for the production of Heavy Water (Deuterium Oxide-D2O) which is used in nuclear power as a’ moderator’ and’ coolant’ as well as research reactors. HWB has mastered the dynamic manufacturing technology through two processes of chemical exchange. Bithermal process H2S-H2O, and mono thermal process NH3-H2. India is one of the world’s largest heavy water producers and meets Indian Nuclear Power Program heavy water specifications.
Plants based on the exchange process Ammonia-Hydrogen (NH3-H2) are linked to the ammonia fertilizer plants for the supply of synthesis gas feed while plants based on H2S-H2O are independent in this regard. HWB operates six Heavy Water Plants in the country with success. Also built and demonstrated at HWP, Baroda, Gujrat is a technology demonstration plant using Water-Ammonia (H2O-NH3) deuterium exchange to make the ammonia-based Heavy Water Plants separate from fertilizer plants. All Heavy Water Plants have well-defined Health & Environmental Policy and excellent record-keeping in these areas.
